Business Ideas For Students
Business Ideas For Students: Business ideas don’t need to be complicated to be effective. That’s why I put together this list of ten simple business ideas you can launch as a student with little or no startup capital
Business Ideas For Students
Some are completely free, and some are cheap enough that you’ll only spend around $100 per month on them (assuming your time has no value). No matter how much money you have, you can follow these ideas and build something worthwhile in your spare time.
Running a blog
In a culture driven by digital content, a new generation of aspiring writers and bloggers is looking to start its own publications. For students, writing and publishing on a topic you're interested in provides not only an outlet for creative expression but also an opportunity to get paid to do something you love. Whether it's part-time income or building up your professional portfolio, starting a business around your own interests (and skills) can make for a fulfilling venture. If blogging isn't your thing, consider these other business ideas.
Starting a Youtube channel
There’s a lot to think about before you start your own channel, but once you’ve got your YouTube business idea in place, it can be a good way to make money quickly. You can gain an audience by producing regular videos on a particular topic that may interest many people. As your audience grows, so will your income. Examples of Youtubers who have turned their channels into businesses include PewDiePie and Zoella (both members of Youtube’s partner program). Doing product reviews
Guest blogging is a popular way to get started with blogging, but in order to make it work you need to find reputable blogs that accept guest posts. Since there are quite a few blogs out there looking for fresh content, it shouldn’t be too hard to find opportunities.
Once you get accepted onto a site, plan on providing high-quality and useful content that fits well with their topic; if you provide useful content, they’ll want more of it. As your audience grows, start looking at other sites that could use some of your expertise; we recommend reaching out through email as a great way to find new opportunities.
Guest blogging on other blogs
Guest blogging isn’t just a great way to attract new readers and establish yourself as an authority in your niche; it’s also an opportunity to showcase your expertise. People who read your guest post will inevitably be interested in reading more of your content, and if you do a good job with that first guest post, they’ll be dying to see what else you have to say.
Once you've built up a solid body of guest posts on other blogs, you can look at starting your own—it's easier to start small (and free) than it is to try and sell potential customers on purchasing something from you before they know who you are.
Becoming an influencer
The best way to have a business idea is to start doing something that other people want. In fact, your customers will be your greatest source of product/service ideas. The harder question is: How do you make money off of that idea? Some businesses, like Whole Foods and Chipotle, will allow you to work in exchange for equity or future profits.
If you are going out on your own, it’s important to formalize your business idea and either create a plan or partner with someone who can help you execute on it. You could also consider starting a side-business while still employed full-time; that way if anything goes wrong in your side project you have an income stream to fall back on.
Opening an Etsy shop
You may already be familiar with Etsy—it’s a global marketplace for handmade goods and craft supplies. Etsy sellers aren’t required to register with or pay fees to Etsy; they only need to sign up and agree to comply with Etsy’s policies. To qualify as an Etsy shop, your storefront must showcase at least five handmade items, which can be sold directly from your website or through social media sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Instagram. Selling on Amazon FBA
Working on Amazon FBA is a great opportunity to start a business that can help pay your tuition. But it’s not as easy as finding something, putting it in a box and selling it to someone who happens to be online at that exact moment.
If you want to succeed, you need great supply sourcing skills and knowledge of manufacturing processes in order to make sure all your product images are taken correctly, which requires special equipment. You also need sales experience and tons of marketing know-how—it’s one thing to sell products when they’re already bought by customers; it’s another to convince people they want them in the first place.
Starting your own online course
Time is money. If you have free time, you should be making money with it. Look through your schedule and think about how much time you spend doing various activities—it’s probably a lot more than you realize. For example, do a little research and see how much leisure time American students spend watching TV or playing video games; we’re talking hours per week here. What can you do to replace these activities with something more profitable? Some ideas include freelance writing, mobile app development, working as an online tutor, etc.
Working from home as a Virtual Assistant
The rise of popular platforms like Udemy and Skillshare have given people with experience and expertise a place to create their own online courses, which they can sell directly to interested students. If you’re a business or technology expert, or know how to create great content, then you can build an audience for your own course.
If you’re interested in learning about starting an online course — but don’t know where to start — then check out Udemy’s How to Make Money with an Online Course . It teaches everything from finding a niche market that isn't saturated yet, building an online platform, marketing your course and creating a plan so you can make money once you launch. (They even help publish your first video .)
Joining Affiliate Programs
Many websites will pay you to join their affiliate program and then pay you a commission on referrals. This is a great way to find products that are in demand, but not expensive (it’s an easy way to earn extra money). One of my favorite websites to join is eBates, because they offer $10 just for signing up and they give you a free $10 gift card upon your first purchase (and if it’s your first time on their site, they also throw in another $10 right after)! If you haven’t already signed up with them yet, go ahead and get started now! Note: I am an eBates affiliate. I use it personally as well as professionally. I just love how user-friendly it is!
Conclusion
As you can see, starting a business is not easy. Before you begin, make sure you have strong knowledge of your industry, solid experience in your chosen field, and a supportive network around you. If that’s all in place (or on its way), there are still some hurdles to overcome: money and permits. But if you can take these challenges head-on with a lot of hard work, confidence and creativity... anything is possible! Good luck!
